Want to Teach?... Sharing Your Skills To Improve The Grant-Seeking Capacity Of YOUR Community
The "Building Grant-Seeking Capacity Within Your Community" session profiles the design, presentation, and refinement of a course for community college students enrolled in a course entitled "BA 209: Introduction to Grant Writing." The session is designed to help experienced grant professionals apply their acquired skills and experience to help others to address specific needs within their communities. BA 209 provides teams of students with hands-on, real-life experience working in partnership with qualified, local non-profit organizations through "community-based learning." BA209 Description: "Covers identifying and evaluating appropriate funding sources, developing community relationships, and crafting successful funding proposals. Student teams will develop skills and knowledge necessary, in collaboration with local nonprofit agencies, to prepare a competitive grant proposal and/or strengthen the non-profit's grant-seeking efforts.
Students successfully completing BA209 will:
1. Assess organizational readiness for grant applications.
2. Identify & evaluate the potential funding sources most appropriate for a nonprofit organization's mission, goals & objectives.
3. Work as a team member & with representatives of a selected nonprofit agency in the proposal development process.
4. Write & present either: 1) a grant proposal that includes effective documentation, statistics, & project budget, or 2) a report that includes a grant readiness assessment of their non-profit agency partner."

2. How to establish symbiotic relationships with nonprofit & academic partners
3. Explore the processes of educational course development & evaluation
Methods and strategies that cultivate and maintain relationships between fund-seeking and recipient organizations and funders
Practices and services that raise the level of professionalism of grant developers
Rick Horton, GPC has more than 40-years of nonprofit sector experience including leading Oregon Zoo efforts to secure over $10 million in sponsorship and grant support. Rick has served as a founding member and past president of GPA's Oregon and SW WA Chapter, currently serves as a GPA Regional Representative and also works as Development Manager for Adaptive Sports Northwest. He has trained hundreds of non-profit staff and volunteers throughout the NW in program planning & proposal development.
