31 Days of GPC

Author: Bonnie Houk, GPCI President, Grant Professionals Certification Institute

Chances are if you are reading this, you are either new to the grant profession or a seasoned professional with multiple awards under your belt. Either way, there are many reasons to be intrigued by the second annual International Grant Professionals Week, March 14-18, 2016. International Grant Professionals week and day is for US! It is a week dedicated to providing awareness to our clients, our employers, community stakeholders and others about what and why we do what we do from day to day.

While this week is dedicated to recognizing the grant profession as a whole, the GPC is something for each and every grant professional on a more personal level. Collectively, as each individual pursues their GPC, they are joining a select group of individuals who have the power to change the world.

I remember back in 2005 when I first read about the Grant Professional Association (then AAGP) through a great book series, Grantwriting Beyond the Basics by Michael Wells. At that time there was some hint of a professional credential on the horizon. I had been writing grants for several years with moderate success, but I was looking for something more, something to give me an “edge” on my competition. I distinctly remember asking my boss if I could join the association and see if it was worth being involved. He told me, in his infinite wisdom, to “try it for a year.” Well, I joined and I have never regretted it. In 2006 I had the opportunity to assist with field-testing some questions for the upcoming credential and it was through that process I just KNEW I had to try and obtain my GPC. I knew it was the very thing to catapult me to being a “cut above” other grant writers. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize that small leap of faith would lead to not only successfully taking the exam, but eventually being invited to participate as a member of the GPCI board of directors and take the helm as president! Initially I just wanted to advance my career in my own location, but now I have the opportunity to impact other grant professionals across the nation!

So what does all this mean to you and how does it tie to International Grant Professionals Week? For the second year, the Grant Professional Certification Institute is providing the “31 Days of GPC” series with a daily clip from a grant professional who has went the extra mile to participate in the exam process and receive their GPC. Those who have their GPC are always eager to tell others why they received their credential and how it has advanced their career. Clips will be featured from GPCs across the nation, from all sectors, and from early career to seasoned grant professionals. I hope you enjoy the lineup of personal testimonies throughout the month of March.

Are you still experiencing test anxiety at the very thought of taking the exam? Don't let fear hold you back. There are several great study guides available to provide practical advice and guidance.
