"Do What You Love, and You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life" #IGPD: We Heart Grant Pros!

International Grant Professionals Day (#IGPD) is a time to celebrate all the amazing talents, expertise, and dedication of grants professionals around the world. It is our special time to recognize the unique function we have in fundraising, understand the important role we play in program development, and rejoice in how we—individually and collectively—make the world a better place, one grant at a time. IGPD occurs on the second Friday in March.

#IGPD is our time to celebrate YOU.
As we gear up for the celebrations, the Presidents of GPA, GPCI, and GPF would like to share why #IGPD is important to all of us every day of the year.
How #IGPD Advances the Profession
By Nathan Medina, GPC – Grant Professionals Association (GPA)
The GPA builds and supports a community of grant professionals committed to serving the greater public good. As the authority of the grant profession, #IGPD recognizes our members for the significant impact they are making throughout society.
I have heard it said that grant pros are the "Rodney Dangerfield's" of our profession (per his famous quote, “I don't get no respect!”.) Our work can be extremely difficult and demanding. However, many outside our field do not always recognize the complexity and importance of our work. #IGPD not only recognizes our members but also communicates the significance of our work to our colleagues, clients, and the public.
How #IGPD Helps to Certify Professionals
By Bonnie Houk, GPC – Grant Professionals Certification Institute (GPCI)
GPCI is dedicated to measuring and promoting competency and ethical practices within the field of grantsmanship. #IGPD supports GPCI's mission by providing awareness of the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) credential. It is through such annual events, which strive to elevate the grants profession, that the GPC will become THE credential for grant professionals around the world.
As a long-time grant professional in a rural area, it is extremely important to share the messages of our annual #IGPD celebration with others in our field. Without the support of fellow grant pros—who embody the great services and programming provided by grant funding—it can be difficult for one person to convey the importance of our profession. Having a mechanism for a common voice across the nation lends strength to the profession and the value we provide to society.
The thing I love the most about the grants profession is to see the tangible results of our hard work pay off. Whether it is professional development for teachers, programming for students in school, new sidewalks in communities, or services for people with medical needs, the satisfaction of knowing the role I played in obtaining needed funds gives me lasting satisfaction in the knowledge I made a significant contribution to the world around me.
How #IGPD Helps to Fund Professionalism
By Heather Stombaugh, GPC – Grant Professionals Foundation (GPF)
The GPF touches the lives of people in our communities by ensuring that resources are available to train, credential, and advocate for those grant professionals serving not-for-profit organizations who secure the funding necessary to serve the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. #IGPD supports our mission by giving all of us a platform to share stories from our field and to make a case for financial support for professional development. That is why we created the I Heart Grant Pros Campaign to support #IGPD and to raise money for scholarships.
I am personally committed to the GPA, GPCI, GPF, and #IGPD because I love my job. I love the amazingly talented and generous souls who fill our field. I love to hear about your missions, your challenges, and your successes. I love to learn new tactics and strategies from you. I love knowing that when I have a problem, there is a list of scores of highly-trained, skilled professionals to whom I could reach out immediately for help. Moreover, you would help me because that is the type of spirit that fills our profession. You humble me, and I think you deserve to be celebrated every day for the work you do in grants as well as all the other hundreds of things grant professionals support in every nonprofit!
Join us in celebrating #IGPD.
#IGPD is important because we all spend so much of our time in our heads, focused on crafting compelling copy, linear Logic Models, and bulletproof budgets. We deserve a moment to raise our eyes from the keyboards and legal pads. We deserve an opportunity to recognize one another for our silent dedication to the field and to the missions we serve. Perhaps most importantly, we NEED more opportunities to be recognized as a profession built on best practices and ethics. For one week, we should relish our collective power and collective strength, loudly and publicly.
