GPA Webinars Motivate Writers out of the Muck

Writer's block. We have all had it.

Maybe, it's when you are starting a project or when you are in the middle of a proposal. You feel like you are trapped in quicksand. It's taking forever to finish a sentence. Nothing is flowing. You are officially stuck.

There are some options besides heading to the water cooler, the fridge or getting lost on Facebook. You can take some deep breaths and then head to the GPA website where there's a goldmine of GPA coaches just waiting for you to listen.

I've done this. It works. When you need a little bit of inspiration – and you aren't on a tight deadline, you can take a break and listen to experts.
GPA has even made this task a bit easier, categorizing all of their webinars into 7 different tracks or topics. Isn't that nifty?

The categories are:

Budgets & Grants Management
Consulting
Evaluation/Collaboration
Federal Grants
Proposal Development & Communication Strategies
Prospect Research/Donor Relations
Other (includes professional development topics, fundraising, etc)

There are more than 70 recorded webinars to help guide you out of the quicksand. An emergency rope that will remind a lonely grant writer that he or she is not alone. Others have slipped into the muck and found a way out.

I've done this motivational break a couple of times which I found priceless. I listened to “Advanced Techniques for Grant Writers: Adding More depth to Your Statement of Need,” presented by Heather Stombaugh, GPC, Principal of Consultant of JustWrite Solutions and Becki Daniels, MLS, Library Manager in Toledo.

Some of the search tips I knew. But others I forgot I knew. The tips motivated me to create keywords for my search. I learned to use the word NOT to eliminate records from the results to retrieve fewer records. For example, Drug abuse NOT prescription drugs.

I was also reminded the importance of white papers where I found valuable data on the disparities of oral health care for people with disabilities. This search led to many articles and papers that led me to a remarkable phone conversation with the chair of the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities! This conversation motivated me back to my computer to create an awesome statement of need. Thank you, Heather and Becki!

If you don't find a webinar that you need GPA is always willing to find a presenter for that topic. And, if you happen to be a presenter, you can also request to have a webinar on one of your topics. Contact Membership Director Kelli Romero at kelli@grantprofessionals.org if you would like to suggest a topic or would like to be a presenter.

I know I'm not alone when it comes to using this handy resource. Kelli says since January, GPA has processed about 1,200 webinar registrations. So next you are stuck, take a GPA webinar break. There's an emergency rope ready to pull you out of the muck and help you shine.
