Grow & Share Grant Expertise: Join Mentor Match!

If you are like me, working as a grant professional has meant operating as part of a small grant team. At times I have found myself feeling isolated and left with unanswered questions. In those moments, I trusted more experienced colleagues with connections, resources, or tools that became my catalyst toward success. I needed a mentor!

For example, in my first year as a grant professional, I struggled to keep track of deadlines, contracts, and requirements. Expensive software was out of the question, so I turned to a seasoned GPA member who I knew had success. She had the perfect solution that I still use to this day. This is why I strongly believe in mentoring. A mentor through GPA could have saved me time and energy in that moment. Now, I can be that mentor for someone else.

The Grant Professionals Association is finding ways to help you grow, connect with others, and give back to our profession through a mentoring program called Mentor Match. Just like a mentor is what I needed, this program can help you when you are feeling stuck and isolated.

Whether you are new to the profession or a veteran with years of experience, the GPA Mentor Match program provides a rewarding experience to learn and grow. Mentor Match is a benefit for GPA members that provides a valuable opportunity to develop your career. The GPA Mentor Match program defines mentoring as "The relationship between a grant professional who has a passion to guide, inspire, and motivate others, and a less experienced person in the grants profession who is seeking to accomplish a goal." The program provides new and unique opportunities to both give back as mentors and gain expertise as mentees.

If you are looking for a way to secure guidance that will help you develop your career in the grant profession, Mentor Match is a great option. Rather than a training program, the program is designed as a tool to achieve transformation by accomplishing professional goals and aspirations. On the other hand, if you are looking for a new opportunity to share your expertise and increase the level of professional within our field, become a mentor!

Signing up to connect with a mentee is easy. Mentees choose their mentor online by indicating preferences according to your field of interest, years of experience, and other  qualifiers. Using these data points, the program creates a mentor match.

Once enrolled, you will have access to exclusive GrantZone communities to ask questions and get feedback. The mentor/mentee relationship offers a fantastic balance to other traditional professional development like workshops, conferences, and webinars, because Mentor Match features long-term (one-year), interactive, and personalized support.

For grant professional veterans, Mentor Match will add inspiration to your daily work routine. Acting in the role of mentor taps into a well of knowledge you may not even realize you possess and provides an opportunity to reflect on your own career. Mentoring is a rewarding experience that expands your grant competencies, develops leadership and interpersonal abilities, and gives back to the profession.

And we need mentors! The Mentor Match program grew substantially over the past year producing numerous requests for mentors. Mentors must be GPA members and have worked in the grant profession for a cumulative total of at least three years. If you are motivated to use your experience to advise others while honing your own skills, become a mentor! Try something new with your career and join Mentor Match. You will not only increase job satisfaction but also, make a positive difference for someone else. Learn more at: https://www.grantprofessionals.org/gpamentormatch.
